【ステートメント】

ここ5年ほどだろうか、目の前にある都市風景が実体のないニセモノのように感じることがある。まるで仮想空間の中の景色、ゲーム画面の中の世界を見ているような感覚。確かに存在するはずなのに、僕の目には世界がバグって見えるのだ。

この作品は東京で撮影した俯瞰写真をどう僕の目に映ったのか、コンピュータで画像加工したものである。一枚の写真を20枚ほどに複製し、それぞれを部分的に切り取ったうえで変形させ重ね合わせていったものである。

景色を再構築させるその過程は、スクラップアンドビルドを繰り返し、バグだらけの現代社会に通じるものがある。しかし一番異様なのは、そこまで画像加工してもなお、一見普通の都市風景に見えるところだ。

色々考えていると、バグ＜BUG＞という文字すら記号化し、もはやその3文字すら無意味なものに思えてくる。まるで全てが崩壊していくかのように。

In the past five years or so, I have sometimes felt as if the urban landscape in front of me were a fake, insubstantial object. It is as if I am looking at the scenery in a virtual space or the world on a game screen. The world appears to be buggy to my eyes, even though it is supposed to exist.
This work is a computer-generated image of a bird’s-eye view taken in Tokyo, and how it appeared to my eyes. I duplicated a single photograph into about 20 copies, cut out parts of each, transformed them, and superimposed them on top of each other.
The process of reconstructing the scenery is similar to that of today’s society, which is repeatedly scrap-and-built and riddled with bugs. What is most bizarre, however, is that even after all this image manipulation, it still looks like a normal urban landscape at first glance.
When I think about it, even the word “bug” has become a symbol, and even the three letters seem meaningless. It is as if everything is collapsing.

会場ではストレートな写真と組み合わせて約20点展示します。また、今回の作品の元となった前作の写真集「PETALOPOLIS/ペタロポリス」（PINHOLE BOOKS）等も販売いたします。

PETALOPOLISは、都市風景に感じる違和感の正体を未来のかけらと捉え、その景色を集めていけば未来の景色を写し撮ることができとし、近未来の東京を撮影したものです。

At the exhibition, approximately 20 works will be displayed in combination with straight photographs. In addition, my previous photo book “PETALOPOLIS” (PINHOLE BOOKS), which was the basis for this work, will be on sale.

PETALOPOLIS is a series of photographs of Tokyo in the near future, based on the idea that the discomfort felt in urban landscapes is a fragment of the future, and that by collecting such landscapes, it is possible to capture a view of the future.

作家プロフィール

新納翔

1982年横浜生まれ。
麻布学園卒業、早稲田大学理工学部中退。
2000年に写真家・奈良原一高氏の作品に大きな衝撃を受け、写真の道を志す。2009年から約2年間、写真家・中藤毅彦氏が代表をつとめるギャラリー「ニエプス」でメンバーとして活動。変わりゆく都市風景をテーマに撮影を続けている。

肉体労働者の街と呼ばれた東京都台東区にある「山谷地区」を撮影するために、簡易宿泊所の管理人として働きながら撮影すること7年間。その後、今は解体された築地市場を内からの視点で見ようとして、市場を担当する警備会社に就職。その後も変わりゆく街・都市風景を追い続けている。

Sho Niiro (b. 1982) is a photographer born and based in Yokohama, Japan. Now in Tokyo. First opportunity I met Photography was when I took Ikko Narahara’s Photo book “Human Land (1956)” casually at library, I was 19 then. After that once I began to study physics and science at Univ., but switched and concentrated Photography.

My theme is to record the landscape and a city that is or will be lost by redevelopment and any other reasons.

I believe that it is the power of the photography.
